Challenge

Earlier in my career at Apollo Education Group, I was contacted by a senior member of the internal communications team who had come across a ton of RAW archived footage from the founder, John Sperling. This included newspaper articles, photos and video interviews shot 10+ years prior speaking about how, “The University of Phoenix” came to be, including all of the trials and triumphs along the way. She had the vision of turning this into a history campaign that we could roll out in segments to share with the internal teams. The challenge was digging through all of the content (hundreds of hours) and splitting them into segments. In addition, custom branding needed to be created for this.

Idea

The first video in the history campaign introducing John Sperling.

For this approach, I leaned on existing photos and created a custom intro bumper in After Effects with camera and movement. The interviews themselves already told a great story and I added custom graphics and mixed a music bed to introduce sections. This helped break up the pacing as the story unfolded.

Result

The series totaled upwards of 15-16 videos chronicling the up and downs of The University of Phoenix. The series shined light on the fight it took to establish online learning and was incredibly well received by the organization.
